Summer project one- done!

I bought this buffet at a garage sale a few weeks back for 15 bucks. I think it had spent the better part of the last decade in a barn. The drawers barely went in and the wood was dry and very rough. It was a project piece.

Here it is now....

The drawers all go in and work! I decided to use the hardware that it came with for the time being. I am moving it into my studio this week.

I had to redecorate something....

I worked on the hillside again yesterday (another 2 wheelbarrows full of brush) and managed to to get into a large clump of something I am allergic to- mainly because the hillside is full of whatever this nasty thing is. I think it's a relative of the nettle family (which to my horror I also have a ton of) but it's giving me a horrid contact allergy. My son is also allergic to something out there, so we are staying inside (mostly) for a few days.

I decided to re do the fish tank. We told the boy if he didn't mess with the tank we would get him fish. ( I just kept having thoughts of him pulling it over onto himself etc... he's only 4 you know) He has (for the most part) left it alone, so next week we are getting him goldfish. I kept large fantails when I was in college (one got to the size of my hand) so I feel comfortable keeping them now. Here is the old tank -( this was this winter and the bar/table wasn't complete yet either....)and the new, improved one......

I still want to put a t valve in the secondary pump so that I can get one of those tacky pirates that come up out of a trunk for Max. He likes those things....

Hell Awaits

I am not going to post any other pictures from the wedding I attended this past weekend. The weather was poor to say the least. When we got down there (about 5 hours before the ceremony) there was a severe thunderstorm with possible tornado going through the area, hail, 60mph winds, sideways rain. It looked pretty grim. Then it cleared up. The ceremony was outside- the reception in a tent ( a HUGE tent- it would have held 400 people) about and hour into the ceremony the weather struck again. There were people HOLDING DOWN the south side of the tent. All in all though,we had a nice time.

My family handled the uncle issue quite quite well. My aunt (his ex) less so. One of his children doesn't speak to him about 50% of the time- she was in full non speaking mode. I pulled up my big-girl panties (as we say in our family) and said hello, smiled, and introduced him to my son. But then I said goodbye and walked away. I think he was very sad- he seemed to understand just what he had lost for a moment. But he is one of those people who really only cares for himself- so he was probably over it by dinner.

The title of this post though- goes toward the dissection that my family put that wedding through on the ride home. My cousin married a nice girl. I like her- so keep that in mind. Her family seemed nice enough. That said, criticism runs rampant in my family. I am not going to go into the entire story. Just imagine a big boned family and wedding party- unfortunate dress choices all around- dresses that wore the owners instead of the other way around-gigantic boobs that looked like they were balanced on a shelf and threatened to pop out at any given moment-fishtail trains- a dj that appeared to just phone it in- little organization what so every at the reception-a family (not mine)that was fighting and giving each other dirty looks-sitting under a huge tent with metal poles in a thunderstorm- and no ADULT BEVERAGES. ARG!!!!

while I am at the wedding

Here are some pictures of mine that make me happy. I took them all, but some are from my days with a SLR so I had to take a picture of the picture with my digital ( I don't have a scanner) sorry if some have a bit of flash.

My boy....

Grand Canyon.....
Austin Tx capitol
Flagstaff Arizona....

On the road to Monument Valley....

Juneau Alaska-
Outside of Santa Fe New Mexico.....
I didn't have a wedding cake- I had wedding watermelons!
Outside of Flagstaff Arizona ( I love that place!)

Sedona Arizona
The farm that we lived at when I first moved up here and where my wedding was held...
My baby shower- I was 7mos. pregnant at that time-
The Grand Canyon in winter....

There is my tour- have a great weekend.

updating the updates

These are some before shots. What I call the rock garden- just ignore the bathtub. It's going to be something- some art project- just what I'm not sure of right now, so it hides behind my fence. There is a ton of plants in here- unfortunately, there is also a ton of weeds.....
View from up the stairs to the rock garden and pine trees. The stairs are only half out.
Here is an after. I weeded (and weeded and weeded etc...) a whole wheelbarrow full of weeds for the compost heap. You can see mulch again!

These are daylillies- they haven't flowered yet.I hope that the deer don't eat them before they get the chance to bloom. In the rock garden I have daylillies, sweet william, zebra grass, some decorative shrubbery, and some other assorted perennials. Oh, yes, and bowling balls. I have bowling balls planted in my gardens.
This is up those same steps. More railroad ties (rotting nasty things) have been removed. The pines have been trimmed up about 7 ft and the needles underneath have been removed. The fence that you see on the right is being put up all the way under those trees soon....
A gratuitous picture of one of my flowers....
The fully trimmed, pruned lilac bush hill. The myrtle will creep all the way around. I just need to add a few more stones to make the steps easier to go up and down.
Then there's this-
Here is the 15 dollar oak buffet that I got at a garage sale.
Here it is stained. It's not done yet- but it's close. The drawers go in all the way now because I planed them, then sanded, then planed, then sanded- you get the picture. I should be finished sometime next week- final clear coat and the hardware. I can't wait to get into the studio!

I had a busy weekend- especially when you consider we hid in the basement most nights due to the tornadoes and storms. The county west of us is under a state of emergency- roads washed out, sewer lines broken, no drinking water, it's a real mess. We were so very lucky.

6/12/08

To gain a new perspective- just move

More work done on the back yard. I don't know if you can tell, but I can. Now, I can see the myrtle. The sun actually makes it through the lilacs to the ground. I just need a few hours with the weed whip now now.... Here is the area directly across from the the above picture. This is still what I see when looking out to the back yard. The rocks are the bed edge, inside the bed is daylillies. I started pruning the apple tree a little, but much, much more needs to be done. There is a bench back there you can barely see in the picture.
This is opposite the apple tree, looking back at the house. The small wooden fence was put up by my husband. I would like to say it was to keep my son safe (that's an awful big drop) but no, I was the one who almost fell off the top -face first. At the bottom right hand corner is a large white concrete box. There are actually 3 of them, about 30 ft in all, and those are my vegetable planters. This year I have tomatoes, herbs, spinach and lettuce. Keeping them about 4 ft off the ground makes sure the stray animals don't eat my crops. Straight ahead in this picture is my "woods" and to the left is a footpath I cleared down to the woodpile and the river. It's pretty crude right now- it's just the bare ground and a brick outline ( I found the bricks on the property- there was a ton of them, which is suprising since I don't have a brick house)
After spending so much time looking out my living room window trying to figure out what I wanted to look at in my yard, I decided to go down to my riverbank and look back at my house. You know, to see what others see. I am so glad I did. I love my little house.

The above picture is from the banks- the below picture is from my marshland.

The next thing I have to do is a "floorplan" of my yard so that I can decide what to do- you know- the "big" picture.

PS- we put a live trap out for whatever is destroying our bird feeders. We caught a cat. My sweet husband at 11:30 pm woke up and let him go. We didn't catch anything else last night.

6/11/08

A snip snip here, and a snip, snip there....

I started work on the back yard today. The rain stopped this afternoon and probably won't be back for a few hours. I thought it would be nice getting the boy outside and I can't mow until it dries out. Here is what I started out with-

Here is what I finished with- I know, it doesn't look like a lot different does it? But here is what I prunned and cut out of the stand of trees and shrubs on the right of this picture-
I probably will get another pile like that ( or larger) out in the next few days. I have a second big pile on the upper part of the hill too. We are also starting to weed whip the hill, plant new grass, mow, take out the rest of the rotting steps and build the fence (which is what some of the garage sale money is going toward) We have a lot of of work to do- and if it doesn't stop raining soon we will be very far behind.

Surviving the garage sale- and tornadoes!

Since the garage sale has been over, my weekend has pretty much been looking at radar forecasts, battening down the hatches, hiding in the basement, and surveying the damage. The river is up. ( Up is one step away from flood by the way. ) The area has trees blown down everywhere. There are still thousands of people without power in our county (and the county doesn't have many people to start with ) The sky has been one perpetual shade of grey for 48 hours now. It is supposed to rain off and on for the next week, but not really storm. The river may flood, but I think the trees may be safe.

Here are some pictures of the garage sale going on. We are so lucky the weather held out for the sale- I just don't know what I would have done with all that crap in my garage for another week or so! The garage is dark in these pictures, but rest assured- it too was full of stuff! The pictures I took before the garage sale were in the garage.

Here are some pictures of the back yard- from out my window. This is the section of the yard that I am going to be working on first (like this week if it stops raining). I will be pruning and cutting down trees, weed whipping, and moving some that decorative (in theory) fence. The bird feeder- Shepards hook was pulled down during the night- by a raccoon or maybe even a bear- looking for snacks. We are going to shoot it tonight if it comes back( if it's a raccoon- you can't shoot a bear). Yes, I said shoot. We live in the country and those things are pests. The log is tied to the bank so it doesn't float away- my husband wanted it for the landscape out there. There is also a HUGE stump stuck in the river just out of camera eye to the right. It must be stuck on the rocks up there.

6/7/08

The garage sale is over-thank you to everyone for your kind thoughts!

It was a success. We managed to stay open for most of the day Friday before the rain started- but Friday night the weather turned scary. A tornado went a few miles to the east of us-forcing us into the basement for a while, and we had a huge rain storm which blew a support off of the canopy. We had to fix that before the whole thing collapsed again. The front and back yards actually had standing water in them. That said, we opened again today and had a good day-hot and sticky but sunny and no rain!

I got rid of --get this -----32 boxes of stuff. Pictures and more tomorrow. I am so tired I am going to bed at 7pm.

Garage Sale post- Please Pray for DRY weather!!!

This morning was a little rough. We have a large 10 x 20 ft tent set up in the front yard to help with the yard sale- the garage is totally full. My parents told me not to worry about the canopy too much- unfortunately a HUGE storm rolled through this morning dumping a ton of rain. We noticed that the rain was collecting and pooling on the roof . I went out and got under the canopy (which is full of garage sale stuff) trying to push the roof up and get the water to run off. I got one side kind of drained, when I noticed that the roof on the other side was collapsing. I got out just in time before the roof gave way and the supports buckled. We fixed it (finally- only 3 poles were bent beyond repair) but now we may get more severe storms tonight. I was so worried about the tent blowing away that I never even thought to worry about the weight of the rain.

Here is a picture of the tent now (fixed) and some before garage sale pics- some of the stuff that is in the garage. I didn't have the lights on so they are a bit dark. The clothes and books are still packed away until tomorrow. I will post more pics when the whole thing is set up. I hope and pray the weather is good (or at least not crappy) so this stuff goes to live with someone else. Wish us luck!

garden therapy- post 2 of 3

The side yard of my house is the polar opposite of my front yard. I will be spending my garden therapy time between the side yard and the back part of my gardens.

1. What is the problem?

It is wild and woolly. The hardscapes are rotting and falling apart. The rock garden is overgrown and crazy. The trees have over grown and need pruning. The fence is only half done. The grass is pretty much not alive in the only section that my son can play in. It is a mess.

2. What would is say?

Help me! I am choking! I want sun, I want water, I want that rotting mess removed and the weeds pulled!

3. What is lacking?

a plan. A comprehensive plan. And a tree trimmer.

4. How would I like this to be described?

FINISHED

Here are the before pictures. The space has a lot of potential. I trimmed the hell out of it all last year so I could see the river. This year I have to trim even more I think.

This is rotting railroad ties that formed stairs down to the side yard. We have removed about half of them. (they circled all the way around the tree) The grass in the open part is sick and rather sad. Mostly wildflowers actually from the hippies. Since I want the boy to be able to play here I have to re seed. Past the grassy area is my woods. I want to remove 2 of the big pines so that the oak and the maple can grow bigger. Last year I removed a ring of horrid shrubbery at the edge of the grass and forest.

The half built fence and the overgrown rock garden. Between the garden and the fence is overgrown 3 ft tall grasses.
The rock garden is actully full of fantastic grasses and flowers, it's just overrun with weeds right now.
The back part of the side yard. The plants are daylillies planted by the builder of this house (not the hippies) Unfortunately, the pines have gotten so big that the sun doesn't reach the flowers anymore and they aren't doing so well. I have to prune and trim.
The view from the bench is one that I hacked out last year. All the shrubs which should have been 3 ft tall were about 10. I have more to go this year.
This is the view UP the rotten railroad tie steps. The fence will be finished this year- going all the way to the right past the pines and than closer to the house and the pines will be raised up to accomodate the fence.

Garden Therapy week 1- post 1 of 3- The Front yard

We bought our little house from hippies. This is not an exaggeration. Unfortunately, they were not happy hippies. When they split up they fought over the house and it sat empty for 3 years. It went on and off the market and finally we bought it almost 5 years ago. As you can imagine (and you have to because I didn't take any pictures) it was wild, overgrown and a big mess.

We moved in late fall- then I had the accident and the baby- and we lost some time in fixing up the house. We have done some projects and have a ton left to go. A lot of what I do with the plantings is removing them- or at least pruning them to make them smaller, and trying to figure out what huge tree limbs to remove so that other trees can "breathe" and that sunlight can get to ground.

To see what I am up against I decided to take pictures instead of trying to describe it all. It was dark and dreary today so the pics are rather dark. I am going to do this in 3 posts because I have a lot to do. This is all about just the front of the house.

The house wasn't in the greatest condition when we go it and it was ugly. The white paint didn't do anything for the structure and the hippies had built this weird pergola on it. The picture I have here is when we painted the house green. The sides of the pergola had already been removed (they were a nasty grate that made me feel like I was living in a prison. A cheap, badly built prison that the birds loved to nest in.

Before pics-

after pics-
My husband cut down the abomination and built the railing instead.
This is the front- it gets no sun. I like the plantings, but need to work on the grass.

I have 3 planters- 2 on the porch, on by the second door. I don't like the pink and this will be the last year for that color.
This is my Iris garden. One of the jobs I have to do on my list is finish painting that little finch that covers up the gas box. I started to late last fall and didn't get to the third panel.
These are the plantings in the very front. Daylilies grow to well up here. I have to thin the heard this season.
I just put in the new pine bark mulch. I like it very much.
I started with the front because I don't really have to do anything up here and the garage sale is taking all my time this week. I will post the pics of the back and the side yards- I have a lot of work to do there- a lot. It's really kind of scary.

A Meme? About little old me????

I got tagged by Wende who was doing a meme by whom? Erin? Well, I love these things so here we go-

10 years ago- what was I doing???
I was mmmm...32 years old. I lived in Houston Tx and I was District Training Manager for KB Toys. Big title- just meant that I trained managers and assistant managers. I hated that job. Hated it with a big, bright, purple passion. I was a store manager for them for years and I enjoyed that job- it was hard, but I liked it (and I was good at it so- plus for me there- I was number one in my district every year I was manager). I hated the promotion. I had 13 stores that I had to deal with (all of them crappy) and I hate, hate, hate Houston. It's damp, hot, and it smells. My jeep got moldy within a month. I worked out of the Galleria- and although it may be a nice place to shop- the building is old and it's hard to work in. Driving from store to store was horrid. Whenever there was a court case I had to go and testify against someone. I guess 10 years ago I wasn't that happy.

5 Non work things on my to do list.
Since I don't "work" I guess everything is sort of fair game.
1. Trim about 20 limbs (big ones) off some of my pine trees in my "forest"
2. finish the garage sale pricing
3. clean the fridge and pantry
4. keep trying to teach the boy to read
5. clean my car (inside)

Snacks I enjoy-
Popcorn. I love buttery salty popcorn. And glazed walnuts. Dark chocolate is good too-

Things I would do if were a billionaire.
I would want to endow my University with a few scholarships. I want to fix the library in my hometown- the second floor can't be used anymore because it might collapse. I also would buy a large tract of land in the Upper Peninsula on one of the big lakes and build a cabin with an off -the- grid power source. (no, I am not a conspiracy nut- it's just there isn't a great deal of stuff in the U.P. and I think being self sufficient would be a good thing)

Places I have lived
Michigan, Austin Tx, Phoenix Az, Austin Tx(again), Plugerville Tx, Houston Tx. I spent some time in Juneau Alaska too....

Jobs I have held.
Restaurant Manager (at 17), Hotel Front Desk manager/ Reservations Manager, Support Service (computers) for Radisson Hotels worldwide, Tennis Club and Gym Manager, Western store mens manager, Toy store manager and district training manager, Manager for Franklin Covey, Manager for Eddie Bauer. I guess I have bossed enough people around for now.....

There you go- Tag! You're it!
