Also, my husband is in the hospital now -as I write this- having a CAT scan of his head. He's been ill and they have some things they need to check out. This will get me mind off it. Why aren't I there you ask? The boy. Flu is rampant here and I am not taking him to where sick people go and sit.

Here you go-
What is the first movie you ever saw in a theatre.
I don't know. The first one I remember is "Star Wars". My Mom, Dad, my brother and I went to go see it. That in itself is amazing because I think that is the only movie I remember my Mom and Dad going to- either with us or without us. They are not movie people. Now, Dad watches DVDS, but my mom could care less.

oh- because I lived in a small, small town and it had one theatre, with one screen- "Star Wars" played forever.

What's the book that had the biggest impact on you?
When I was very small it was "little house on the Prairie" books. I read them all. They were yellow, paperback and I had the entire series. I loved them.
When I was about 12 or so I read "Gone with the Wind" , "The Godfather", and "The Stand"
Later, I would add "East of Eden" to that list of books. I loves these books, I still have copies of them by my bed. Really, they are about relationships, trust, and good vs evil.

I never was into the entire Judy Bloom thing, or VC Andrews and those damn kids in the Attic. There wasn't really any teen vampire stuff back then, and things like "Catcher in the Rye" and "Lord of the Flies" just didn't do it for me.

In what fictional place would you like to vacation, and what would you bring back as a souvenir
I don't know really. All I can think of is that I would love to go to the beach. Any beach. I would bring back sand.

What place (where you live) gives you joy?

My back yard, down by the river. Or, the upper peninsula. It's beautiful up there. quiet.

What's your drag song?
I don't get this question. I guess "It's raining men" by the Weather girls. I have always liked that song.

That's it. I had the paint already- it's a gallon of mistint I got for 5 bucks. Then I put some of the stuff back in, but edited. A desk and table for my sewing, some lamps. A painting. Now I have to think about storage and start work on the wall across from the desk. That wall is going to be paneled and painted white with shelves and a rod.

It's the questions meme- 5 at time is the way to go!

SO, it seems that doing the first 5 questions tonight is the social norm. We don't get trick or treaters at the chair household. Too remote. But-JUST IN CASE- I always buy one bag of candy. A bag of candy I wouldn't mind eating myself. Reeses. Jumbos. Yum.

Would you rather never listen to music again or lose your TV?
I would die if I lost my TV. Especially the oral part of hygiene. Plus, being a woman with a vagina is problematic during most, if not all, of the really exciting eras of human development. That said, I would love to go see the Mayan and Aztec civilizations when they were humming along. As long as I got to keep my heart in my chest, that is. We don't know a whole lot about that society and what they did. I sure would like to see it for myself.

Would you rather die peacefully, but unexpectedly in your sleep at 60, or at 90 after years of disease...

Before the cancer, I would have said 60. Now, it would be 90. I really, really, really don't want to die. Have I made that clear? I want every available medical test, trial, drug or machine at my demand to avoid leaving this earthly plane.

Do you think that questions such as "what's your favourite colour/ice cream/album of all time" help you get to know another person?

Nope. It just lets you know what color/ice cream/album they like at the time they answer the question. I don't know if anyone can tell anything about me by the fact I like mint chocolate chip ice cream, the color green and the Dixie Chicks. But go ahead if you think that opens some doorway to my soul.

The boy is sick.

                                                                    It's Batman!

Woke up sick. She's been married twice- one kid with each husband. She has been laid off now for months. This is not the first time she has been laid off for an extended period of time. She's not lazy or a bad worker- but I fear she has no common sense what so ever. Her husband is extremely smart- but what we call up here "bone idle"- part time work sometimes. No work now. They now have no money. None. This isn't the first time this has happened either.

I thought maybe I had written something last time this happened, and maybe I did and erased it- I don't know. Last time they had their house, car and motorcycle repossessed. My aunt went out and bought them an older used car, and tried to get them set up for job interviews and some public assistance (my Aunt is VERY connected in that field where they live) I don't even know if my cousin is looking for a job. My Aunt doesn't think so. She isn't even trying to get public assistance to stay afloat.

My Aunt doesn't know what to do now either. I know she wouldn't help my cousin and husband anymore- but there's grandkids involved (ages 5 and 6) . She can't have them stay with her- she lives in one of those age controlled condos- I think you have to be 55 at least to live there- when she bought it she just met the age conditions herself. Plus, now she's the head of the board of that condo- so she really can't break the rules. In addition, she has NO money herself. She works in a non profit education system.

Anyway. I don't know what to do. I feel so bad for those kids. In December, without a job, they will lose their rental house and have the electric turned off. (my Aunt paid this month apparently at the last minute) .We have no extra money. We live too far away in another state to have them stay with us (besides, my county has a 13.4% unemployment rate) . Her Dad is jerk and they don't talk. His Dad is no help either. There is no extended family except me.

I want to go down there and kick her ass. I'm pretty sure that won't help though. I think her first husband-father of the oldest kid- will try to get custody of him. Ripping the brothers apart doesn't seem right, but at least one would have a roof over his head and heat.

Can I do anything?

The illness that just won't go away.

As I have written before, I am sick. Really sick, not just cough, cough sick. I spent all of September off and on sick because the boy child started school and the petri dish that is kindergarten is very contagious. Then, 12 days ago I got the flu. Probably. I got all the symptoms, but they don't test anymore up here. 5 days after I got the flu, I got an ear infection and a sinus infection. The ER visit followed. The antibiotic didn't help. one. damn. bit. 5 days later and I'm sicker than ever- no earaches, but sicker than ever. The cough syrup did work like a champ though, so sleeping was easier.

I called my Dr. on Friday. When I got put into hold hell I knew things were bad in this area health- wise. There is a 3 minute recording that lists all of the symptoms on H1N1, what is dangerous, what isn't. They are trying to get everyone to stay home for 7 days if they are sick, not just the 24 hours after the fever breaks. I was on hold for 22 minutes. Finally I talk to a nurse, explain the issue, she transfers me to the triage nurse. Triage. In small town Michigan. She takes all my info, tells me she'll call back. See, I still have the infection. I shouldn't still be sick. After 4 more hours, she calls back. Tells me to stop taking my antibiotics, they are calling in a more powerful antibiotic and to make sure to read all of the cautions. I don't have to see the Dr. I can't see the Dr. They are too busy.

The cautions are horrific. Tendon breakage is the oddest of the 4 pages. Just as I'm about to take the first one, my Mom calls. She's been in the ER. Infection and breathing problems. They prescibed the same very powerful drug to her- gave her one in the ER. Now, this is two separate hospital systems, so now I have a bit more confidence in this drug, but these side effects are scary. I decided to take it anyway (Moms not having any side effects yet) The drug makes me dizzy. Not horribly, but dizzy all the same. Yesterday was a wash. I wake up today though, and feel better than I have in 12 days. I think this might just work.

The pills (10 of them total) cost me 20 bucks with my insurance. Retail cost was 158.00. My Mom got 7 pills. It cost her 39.00 with her insurance. Same pills. I hate our insurance industry.

hysterical!

Going through the Anthropolgy catalog and I see this collection . The ear pain was horrid. It felt like someone had stuffed a sock into my ear and then grabbed a stick and was forcing it down. The sinus pain was awful. The crap was blocking my lungs. I gave in and went to the ER. ( I had tried to get into my doctor the last two days of the week, but they were swamped and it was impossible)

I live in small town, but we have a pretty nice hospital. Better yet, it has new equipment and a new ER.

I prepared myself for a wait on the drive in. (the boy I dropped off at his grandmas house-I'm not taking a well kid to a sick hospital) I get there and there aren't many cars in the lot. But, there is more than the one lot, so I'm still pessimistic. I was wrong, there's no one there. NO ONE. I walk right in.

I get a mask. I check in. I get seen by a physicians assistant immediately. She takes one look at my ear and says "oh my" but not in a good way. Apparently it's awful in there. My throat is a mess. My sinus and ears are infected. I have the flu.

What kind of flu? I ask. She replies- it doesn't matter to us. We don't test- we treat. Well, how should I know what flu vaccine to take if I don't know what I have now? I say.
She replies- get them both when you are well. Then she says- the only flu we are seeing right now is H1N1. ( I checked that out on the CDC website- she's right. Seasonal flu is very rare right now, but H1N1 is everywhere and growing. They are afraid that a large portion of the population will have it before the vaccine gets out into the masses.)

I go to my pharmacy with my scrips. My Meijer store gives free antibiotics. Free. No charge. Yea. My codeine/Phengran cough syrup is 5.07 cents. The decongestant she recommended is over the counter (musinex d) and costs almost 11.00. My insurance covers the ER visit- plus I don't have to worry about it being denied for not being an "emergency" or any such silliness. I don't need to call the insurance before I go. Getting better will end up costing me 16.18. That I will pay for out of health savings account. 16.18, 24 hours, and I already feel better.

I was thinking how easy it was for me to be seen. Easy and painless. I don't have to worry about how to pay for this. I don't have to worry about losing my job because I have been flat on my back for the last 4 days. The most important scrip I got (antibiotics) was FREE because Meijer understands how important those are to people trying to get well. So many people are going to suffer this fall and winter due to the flu- and not just because of the effects of the illness. The cost and lost work are going to be devastating to many. Some, I'm sure, will lose their jobs due to the H1N1. Others won't be able to go to a Dr. or get the right meds because they can't pay. That's just not right.

We need health insurance reform, and I'm tired of idiots in Washington saying we can't afford it.

The basement- the root of all that is evil

well, at least in my house. That is why we worked so hard on making the main room a media room this summer. Redoing the floors, new rugs, moved in different furniture etc.... with that almost done (still need a wall of shelves and some more attention to the bar area) I decided that for the Apartment Therapy Cure this time around I would do a one room cure (really two rooms) and really finish the basement.

My sewing room is off of the main room of the basement. It's huge- over 10 ft wide and about 20 feet long. There is the small matter of the furnace and deep freeze in there, but other than that it's all mine. And I let it get out of hand. Really, really, out of hand.

the sewing desk...

<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; It's dark too. This weekend will be our final push to finish the basement floor before it becomes too cold to paint it. That means, I have to clear out my sewing room. I'm not going to post the before pictures yet. It's still too traumatic for me. I don't understand how this room got so far out of control.

The plan for this room though, is to paint the floor (not all of it as this room is also the furnace room and I don't plan on paining anywhere near that) paint the cement wall, install another shelf and rod, go through all my supplies and do a giant purge. Maybe hang some art and put a few lamps in there. This is one half of my AT cure project this fall- the other half is my upstairs office.

See the etsy link?

You know, up in the upper right hand corner? Actually, I wanted to try something odd. I came across the recipe for glazed donut (bread) pudding and it fit the bill as being new to me and odd. The problem- it was a huge recipe. It calls for two dozen donuts. So, I came up with something on my own that is smaller. I liked it- the only problem is that I couldn't find day old donuts, and even after leaving them on the counter all day long, they still weren't quite hard enough. Next time I'll get them a day or two before I need them.

Cut 6 donuts up in cubes (this would fit in an 8x8 pan) the older (and staler) the better...

In a bowl mix up-

1 can sweetened condensed milk. NOT EVAPORATED milk

1 can (15 ounce) of canned fruit. I used pears in their own juice. Cut up what ever fruit you use into tiny itty bitty little chunks. I think pinapple would be good- the actual recipe calls for fruit cocktail.

Raisins. I used about 4 ounces of golden because that was what I had.

1 beaten egg

1 tsp cinnamon (and nutmeg if you want)

once, that is all mixed up, dump the donuts into it and coat all the pieces. Let the donuts soak up all the liquid. Put the mixture into an ungreased baking dish.

bake at 350 degrees for about an hour. Check it, the center will gel up and the edges will be all crusty and good.

Before cooking-
after cooking-

I made a glaze to pour over individual pieces. The glaze called for rum, which I didn't have, so this is what I made instead-

1 stick butter

confectioners sugar (enough to absorb the butter

vanilla extract -1tsp

half/half- enough to make it a glaze with a syrup like consistancy.

The rum sauce was 1lb butter, 1 lb confectioners sugar and rum to taste-just in case you wanted to know. We would have been eating rum sauce over everything for the next year if I made this.

This was very rich and quite sweet (DUH) so this small pan would serve about 6-8 people I'd think.

I didn't just make this yesterday- I also made a ham. But no pictures-sorry.

A guy walks into a bar...

A man walked into a very high-tech bar. As he sat down on a stool he noticed that the bartender was a robot. The robot clicked to attention and asked, "Sir, what will you have?" The man thought a moment then replied, "A martini please."

The robot clicked a couple of times and mixed the best martini the man had ever had.

The robot then asked, "Sir, what is your IQ?"

The man answered "oh, about 164."

The robot then proceeded to discuss the 'theory of relativity','inter-steller space travel', 'the latest medical break throughs',etc.......

The man was most impressed. He left the bar but thought he would try a
different tact.. He returned and took a seat. Again the robot clicked
and asked what he would have? "A Martini please."

Again it was superb. The robot again asked "what is your IQ sir?"

This time the man answered, "Oh about 100". So the robot started discussing Nascar racing, the latest basketball scores, and what to expect the Dodgers to do this weekend. The guy had to try it one more time. So he left, returned and took a stool.... Again a martini, and the question, "What is your IQ?"?

This time the man drawled out "Uh..... bout 50".

The robot clicked then leaned close and very slowly asked,

"D-o y-o-u p-e-o-p-l-e s-t-i-l-l w-a-t-c-h G-l-e-n-n B-e-c-k a-n-d S-e-a-n H-a-n-n-i-t-y?"

A kitchen mini-cure for Culinary Therapy

Today was a stay at home day. Take the kid to school (we are lucky in Michigan in that we have "schools of choice" meaning I can send my kid to ANY public school I want to. In any district or city. I don't have to live there, but I do have to get him there. No buses. We decided to send our kid to the larger of the cities around here -bigger tax base-more diversity-besides, it's the school system we ourselves went to) and then go to the grocery store.

On a good day, I can take the kid in, go to 2 or three stores and be back in two hours. It's pouring and cold today so I decided to stay for the day after shopping. The pantry was a sty.

and if this is a mess, it's hard for me to do anything in my kitchen that resembles cooking. I put away the groceries and cleaned the fridge and freezer. I try to do that every month. It should be every week, but that's just not possible. Then I turned on the pantry. Everything out, then everything back in. I filled up a garbage can full of boxes, crushed napkins, etc... and got a few things to put aside for the garage sale. Mostly though, I just put everything where it needed to be after obviously slacking on this for a while.

I made a school lunch area-
a breakfast area- (triscuits are a lunch thing- but didn't fit)

canned good drawer...

box stuff drawer...

I can walk in now!

Oh- here's the fridge and freezer-

and before I forget- here are the cookbooks that I keep in the pantry- I have more but there are in my office because they don't get used as often as these do.

So, is this the bones part? Homemade meatballs with homemade sauce and angle hair pasta.

Today was my first volunteer day at the boys school. I worked with the kids for an hour in their classroom cutting out circles, putting them in order and gluing them down. It's a pattern thing..then I helped with lunch.

Let me just say this first- no matter what you pack for your kid to eat- he doesn't eat it. He might eat some of it, but apparently 5 yr olds don't need food.

Imagine 125 or so 5 yr olds eating lunch in a gym-20 or so at each table. I only needed to focus on my sons class- so that was 22 little people, some eating sack lunches, some eating hot lunch (cheese pizza, apple sauce, and milk). I opened up a half dozen milk containers (still tough even for me) poked way too many juice pouches, cleaned up messes, kept two boys from spitting milk on each other- you know, the normal behavior for 5 yr olds.

If it wasn't for the volunteers (parents like me and the "grandmas") I don't know how school would work. My sons teacher had 2 "grandmas" today. a teachers aide, and me. We counted the kids to make sure we had them all, made sure they went in and out of the bathrooms, ate, and then lined up and had recess. There are even more parent volunteers and "grandmas" out there.

It's a crazy situation, but nice. There is so much more parent involvement than when I was in school. Of course, it's because our education system is hideously unfunded that we have to be involved.

What did my charming son do on Friday?

I don't think you will ever know if you are cut out to be a mother until some event takes place that is so far out of what you think can happen that you are in new territory.
We came home from school and things were fine. He wanted to do some crafts until his Dad came home- it was only about an hour until that happened. The dining room table is where we usually do our crafts-but currently it's full of Etsy items that haven't been put away (my bad). I told him he could work at his desk in the living room. He wanted glitter- but the living room is carpeted, so no glitter. But, I gave him construction paper, glue sticks, markers, scissors and crayons. I was on the computer in the next room (which is open to the living room) and he was in there for about 20 minutes.

Now, with the stage set, let me tell you what I found. He took after my CURTAINS with the SCISSORS. He managed to try to cut out shapes etc... in/on 3 curtains. The denim resisted his advances, but the white duck gave him what he wanted. It never had a chance.
He was silent but deadly. I was less than 15 ft from him and I never had a clue.

This is where I can tell you that I know now that I am firmly against corporal punishment. I thought I was before, but since he came out of this without even a spank on the butt, I know that that is how I feel.
So, how was he punished if I don't believe in spanking?
1. weekends are his cartoon time. He loves cartoons. He has no cartoons this weekend, and he knows that he brought this on himself. He hasn't even asked to see any.
2. No more arts/crafts anywhere but the main table with me around for a while. This upset him because he says he's a big boy. I said big boys don't cut up their mothers curtains. He loves art and I don't want him not to love it, so it's a fine line I have here.
3. I took all the money out of his piggy bank to pay for the curtains. I explained, and showed him, that he had enough money to buy a large Playmobil Egypt set. (he loves those things) I told him he had to buy me new curtains to replace the ones he cut up. I took 44.00 total from his piggy bank. We talked about how many rocks he picked up in the yard to get that money etc... it really got to him to see it all go away.
4. Lastly, he spent a lot of time talking to me about what the hell he was thinking. We discussed how things belong to people. That I really liked those curtains. I think that he understood what he did was wrong, and that sometimes just saying sorry isn't enough. I hope so at least. He was concerned that I was going to cut up something of his. We talked about how two wrongs don't make a right. That destroying something of his wasn't going to make what he did go away, or make it right.

I was so surprised that I was so calm. Surprised, but somewhat happy. My patience has been tested before with the kiddo, but I've been had my curtains cut to shreds by someone that I love, and it was interesting in hindsight to see my reaction to it.
I think this turned out to be a learning experience for both of us. I'm not going to say it was a good thing though.
It did get me to put up my winter curtains though....

I'm not ignoring you...

we are just sick here.
