Pros-
1. it's fake. The wall AND the brick.
2. There is a non working fireplace behind that sofa.
3. We are going to remove that wall and redo all the walls, the ceiling and the flooring. Just not this year. Or maybe not even next.
4. I have hated it since we moved here......almost 9 years ago.
Cons.
1. It really is fine the way it is.
2. It's a lot of work to paint brick...even if it is just brick facing.
3. I would have to paint that door the same color I think.
4. I am lazy.
Ideas? And yes, that mantle is too high. BUT, to lower it, or remove it would muck up the wall and again, that wall is not being removed and/or fixed this year. It must stay. But, I could paint it the color of the bricks (if I painted) to try to make it blend into the wall more....

In my old place I had fantasies about sheetrocking over my brick fireplace. I would do that here and then maybe paint the mantel the same color as the door? Because everyone needs more projects!
No ideas really, but as a word of caution if you ever decide you want to remove the paint from the (fake) brick, it'll be a lot of work. The fireplace in my house, which is real brick, was painted a really horrible red color when we moved in and my ex, who granted was kind of incompetent, had a real interesting time sanding the paint off.
I would be far more worried about painting that brick if I EVER thought I wanted to keep it. But I don't. Ever. It is awful.
Even if I painted it, and the color was off, I would just paint it again. I just wish I had the $$$$ to remove the entire mess and start again. Alas, I don't.

definitely paint the brick- it will have such an impact. What color are you thinking? White?
I would paint the brick first and see how you like the wood mantle with it before painting the mantle. Is there a fireplace behind the couch? if not, can you just remove the mantle entirely?
there is a fireplace hole behind the sofa...the fireplace caught the house on fire so it's been removed and the roof patched.....but the box is still back there....it needs to be removed when the wall is removed.
The mantle MIGHT be able to removed. I don't know and can't tell if the mantle was installed before or after the brick facing. If we removed the mantle there MIGHT be a large hole in the brick. Maybe not.
I was thinking an off white color...not bright white because the furniture wouldn't look right in my opinion.
The room is painted paneling so if we were to install something over the brick even temporarily, it would have to be paneling for the grooves...I just don't know if I want to put that much money into this temporary project..no matter how much I hate this wall...

Blank it all out. Soothe the area and make it nirvana. You should do it yesterday.
Love Alana's comment! If it bugs you, do what you can to make it better. You have to look at it all the time, it might as well be as pleasant an experience as possible.
